The Pacific
Dowser is a mechanical dimmer for discharge lamps (such
as MSR, MSD, CDM & CST250) designed specifically
for use in Selecon's Pacific range.
 Dimming
response is similar to that of dimming a tungsten halogen
lamp using a phase control dimmer.
Combining high light output and a colour temperature
of 5600 - 6000K discharge light sources are a highly
desirable addition to the lighting designer's tool
kit. Until the advent of the Pacific ellipsoidal range
and now, the Pacific Dowser, useage has been limited
due to the high cost.
The unique modular design and advanced technology of
the Pacific brings this powerful tool with in the reach
of most.
The Pacific Dowser simply slots into the front of the
Pacific lamp house and then the desired lens system is
mounted onto the dowser.
As the dowser is mounted 'within' the luminaire
other accessories such as colour scrollers and animation
wheels can be fitted to the front of the luminaire. Use
of pattern rotators is unaffected.
The Pacific Dowser’s patented dimming action is
smooth, quiet and reliable.
The slide out modular design makes cleaning and maintenance
simple.
Features
Full output control of a discharge lamp, with a
fade profile similiar to that of a 2.0kW tungsten
halogen lamp.
Close - slowest speed set by the control console.
Note the Pacific Dowser is not designed for repeated
fast strobe type action.
One mains power supply only required for each luminaire,
power supply and Dowser as Pacific MSR Power Supply
includes dowser main power outlet (Powercon ).
Push button channel address, as for moving lights.

Stand alone operation with local level control
- no DMX console required.
LED brightness user selectable - On / Low / Off.
DMX status monitor LED (green).
DMX termination switch.
Easy to maintain, four screws to access slide out
dowser / motor / pcb assembly.
Use of COLOUR FILTERS with the Pacific MSR & Dowser
The Selecon Pacific MSR range with the new dowser
accessory is quickly becoming a favourite, delivering
high light output in a quality profile beam. The output
of the Pacific MSR is VERY efficient, comparing favourably
to that from a 2.5kW MSR profile from other manufacturers.
The Pacific is also a very compact sized luminaire.
All of this means that the operation of colour filters
and colour scrollers has to be managed carefully. To
ensure useful life colour extenders may have to added
to the front of the lens tube, below are notes for each
Pacific optical system for your guidance.
Please note actual life will depend on the type of
filter you use, colour, dowser intensity setting and
the lamp peak / flat distribution. We strongly recommend
that the lamp distribution is adjusted to a flat setting
to ensure best filter life.
The secondary energy focus which must be avoided
if the filter is to survive depends on the beam angle,
for Zoomspots this position therefore varies. Our suggestions
provide a position that will avoid this damaging secondary
focus for the specified zoom range. Selecon does not
manufacture tube extenders. Companies such as City Theatrical
have an extensive range.
Pacific 12°-28° & 14°-35° Zoomspots
Best filter position - 100mm minimum in front of lens
tube.
Pacific 23°-50° Zoomspot
Best filter position - 300mm in front of lens tube.
Pacific 5.5°-13° Zoomspot
Best filter position 100mm minimum in front of lens tube.
Operates effectively in standard position for narrow
angles.
Pacific 90° Fixed Beam
Fine in normal position.
Pacific 20° Fixed Beam
Fine in normal position.
Pacific 30° Fixed Beam
Best filter position - 200mm in front lens tube.
Pacific 40° Fixed Beam
Best filter position - 100mm minimum in front lens tube.
Pacific 50° Fixed Beam
Fine in normal position.
Weight: 8.2kg without the luminaire.
Size diagrams and order codes are detailed on the Pacific
Dowser Specification Sheet.
Dimming Response
Download the Tech
Note (.pdf 8kb) on using Console Dimmer Curve
Profiles to obtain smoothest fade performance.
Using the 'square' dimmer output provides a virtually
absolutely smooth fade in the range of +1 - 4 seconds,
the time range in which currrently some fader movement
can be seen when using the standard dimmer curve output.

FISHER & EISENHAUER SELECT
SELECON MSRS AND DOWSERS
“Chita Rivera: The
Dancer’s Life” opened
on Broadway on the 11th December, 2005; a musical stage
show honoring a woman who throughout her 50-year career
has been described as a “true Broadway star” and “a
force of nature”.
This magical tour offers its audience a rare look into
a time when great musical numbers in the theater were
born, as related and performed by the woman for whom
they were created celebrating some of her most stunning
and legendary Broadway performances – from West
Side Story to Chicago to Kiss of
the Spider Woman.
Paramount in any lighting design that involves dance
is the side / boom lighting that enhances the audience’s
ability to see the intricate steps and body movements
that a dancer is performing. For Chita and her cast
of ten this challenge fell into the hands of renowned
lighting designers Jules Fisher and Peggy Eisenhauer
who recognised that the small Selecon wide-angle Pacific
zoomspots were the solution to delivering the best
high output with the control required for low sidelight.
"The (7) Pacific 23º-50º MSR 575-HR
Zoomspots fitted with Pacific Dowsers worked perfectly
as low sidelights for Chita Rivera, The Dancer’s
Life, currently performing at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre
on Broadway.
A unit located in each wing
provided the modelling light for the dancer’s
legs and torso which is so valuable to dance. It
gave us the power of an automated fixture, without
the bulk, allowing us to mount it close to the floor.
The wide zoom range allowed us to tailor the beam
spread for each shot.
It made a great contribution to our show."

MURDER, MAYHEM and MSRS with DOWSERS

The New Zealand premiere of "Boris Godunov" was
a new production from The NBR New Zealand Opera, and
came complete with a compelling story, operatic grandeur,
theatrical excitement and a star from Moscow’s
Bolshoi Theatre in title role.
Selecon supplied lighting designer, Tony Rabbit with
Pacific MSRs fitted with Dowsers and Pacific
1200W 80V units which he used to achieve some
of the most stunning lighting effects seen in the production.

Poulopoulos) - murdered by Boris Godunov.
Director and International Opera Lighting Designer
Matthew Richardson declared: "I am
very impressed with the output of the Pacific MSR and
the smoothness of the dowser dimming action."
The Cathedral Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, the
Washington National Cathedral
chose Selecon Pacifics equipped with CDM light sources
and dowsers to resolve existing problems of short lamp
life and poor quality of lighting for television and video.
This installation demonstrates the
low cost of ownership promise from Selecon through energy
consumption reductions, lamp replacement cost, technician's
time and removing the need for the hire of supplemental
lighting equipment.
